iPhone 4 rogue data usage – it has started up again

A while back I posted that over the span of a few days, my phone had used up about 4GB of 3G data, which really hurt when I had to pay up to my cell phone service provider. I then restored my phone, and added back my app’s one by one, and everything seemed to be fine.

Low and behold, yesterday my phone uploaded 1.3 GB in the space of a few hours, luckily this time it was at work and using the wifi network. Not good for work, but at least I don’t have to pay this time around.

So I went to our IT guys, and they tracked what was happening using my phone’s IP address. So far, it seems like my phone is pinging the mail server constantly, even though I have set push emails as off and that I have to fetch them manually. The really interesting thing is what happened when I turned my phone off – one of the IP addresses that showed up as having data sent to was, wait for it……a server registered to Apple!

I have to dash to a meeting now, but I am really keen to find out what IT tells me in a couple of hours when I go back to them.

Apple, please don’t be the cause of this, especially after reading this morning about you guys storing location information on our iPhones.

I’ll check back in later.
