A comment I recently heard:

“the downside to flash is that not everyone on all appliances can view it. There is a new gimmick out there called jQuery that imitates BASIC basic flash banners, but can be viewed on all the before mentioned appliances.”

When someone designing your website talks about iPhones and iPads as appliances, and J-Query as a new gimmick……run!
